The Greater Wabash Regional Planning Commission (GWRPC) is initiating efforts to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP) aimed at reducing and eliminating serious-injury and fatal crashes affecting all roadway users on all public roads in the region. This planning area includes Crawford, Edwards, Hamilton, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, and White Counties, encompassing the cities of Albion, Carmi, Fairfield, Flora, Grayville, Lawrenceville, McLeansboro, Mount Carmel, Olney, and Robinson.

Key safety stakeholders have been selected to serve on a Safety Committee due to the significant role they and their agencies or organizations play in improving traffic safety and ultimately reducing traffic-related fatalities and injuries. The Safety Committee will include representatives from engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency medical services. By serving on the committee, members will help ensure that the planning team reaches a wide range of local stakeholders and gains a strong understanding of regional safety concerns and challenges.

Additional outreach efforts will invite stakeholders and community members to share their perspectives through a public safety survey conducted during the planning process.

The GWRPC CSAP, along with several other Comprehensive Safety Action Plans across the state, is being funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The plan will be developed in accordance with the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) funding program, making GWRPC and local agencies eligible for future funding opportunities through SS4A and other state and federal programs.

The plan will be created with leadership from a consultant team, working in close coordination with GWRPC, the Safety Committee, and a broader group of regional stakeholders to support safer transportation networks for all.
